Praise and Good Wishes for the Band

Following the Band’s recent performance at Filey on7th September and with just over a week to go before our appearance at the National Championships we were delighted to receive the following message of support from a former member of the Band:

“Please pass on my thanks for a great concert at Filey. It was great to see you and hear the Band in such good voice. What better way to spend an afternoon than listening to some excellent playing with true brass band sounds in a perfect setting and with an appreciative audience (well apart from actually playing). C*** and I enjoyed the program and all the soloists but my especial favourite was the Band’s rendition of Deep Harmony – this was so well controlled, tuneful and balanced with a range of dynamics. I couldn’t work out what was acting or fact with your compere but the audience certainly warmed to him and it all added to the show. I shall be thinking of you on the 20th [at Cheltenham] and watching as the results come in.”

East Park Bandstand Concert Sunday 18th May 2014

The Band enjoyed an excellent afternoon on Sunday 18th May in East Park, playing on the newly installed victorian-style bandstand in the glorious sunshine to a large crowd. Thanks to the sponsorship of Smiles Dental Hull the help of their staff, and the organisation of our band chairman, Smiles Dentist David Vivian, the band played a two hour programme to a very appreciative audience. You can see a medley video below thanks to Graham Marshall for putting this together and also various photographs from our facebook page that were taken throughout the afternoon.

North of England 3rd Section Champions!

The Band has had great success at the North of England Regional Championships in Darlington on Saturday 15th March. The test piece was “Partita for Band – Postcards from Home” by Philip Wilby. Our performance was rated highly by the adjudicator, Mr Kevin Wadsworth, who awarded us first place and the title North of England 3rd Section Champions!

By becoming 3rd Section Champions, the band has again qualified for the National Finals at Cheltenham in September and can now expect promotion to the 2nd Section in 2015. In addition, our percussionists have retained their trophy as “Best Percussion Section”. Finally, the hard work of Musical Director, Ian Scott, over the last two years has been rewarded by receiving the trophy for “Best Conductor” in the 3rd Section. Ian has brought the band from 7th place in 2012 on his arrival, to runners up in 2013 and to North of England 3rd Section Champions 2014!

The band members all make a tremendous commitment, giving all their time and effort freely and even paying for their own seats on the coach! This commitment has been well rewarded in Darlington. However, the challenge is now to raise funds for the National Finals at Cheltenham to cover coach and hotel arrangements. There is the opportunity to become a Friend of the ERYB and help support a very successful band. The band is also open to future sponsorship.

Undoubtedly the 15th March 2014 was a day to remember for the Band under their Musical Director – Ian Scott.

The Band’s next performance will be at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show on April 26th.

ERYB is No.1 Band in the Northern Area 3rd Section!

ERYB at Cheltenham

Following the success at the North of England Regional Championships in March and a good showing at the National Finals on September 22nd in Cheltenham, the Band is now top band in the Northern Area 3rd section according to the latest league tables published on all4brass.com on 24th September.

The Band continued 2013 in style by coming 7th in the National Championships 3rd section out of 17 qualifying bands, from a starting list of over 120. The weekend was hard work with the journey to Gloucestershire and a 2 hour rehearsal at Tewkesbury on the Saturday. The Band thanks Tewkesbury Town Band for the use of their facilities for the rehearsal.

Then, on the Sunday morning, the band arrived at Cheltenham racecourse. We were drawn third in the playing order. The contest was under way at 9.30am and ran for 6 hours with the adjudicators, Steve Pritchard-Jones and Simone Rebello, announcing the results around 4.00pm. A long day with a journey back to East Yorkshire still to come.

LGB Brass earned a deserved first place at Cheltenham although there were some surprises with the bottom bands. Achieving 7th place at Cheltenham made the ERYB the most successful of the Northern area 3rd section qualifying bands. Another good day for the ERYB under Musical Director Ian Scott.

Final Preparations for Cheltenham

Following our success at the North of England Regional Championships in March, the Band is now building up to the National Finals on September 22nd in Cheltenham.

The Band has been riding high through the summer after qualifying for the Nationals as one of two bands from the North of England. The Autumn concerts have now got off to a great start with a highly acclaimed performance at Filey last Sunday. This Saturday (14th) the Band will be performing at Harrogate Flower Show between 11.30am  and 1.15pm.

For all fans of Brass Band music and supporters of the ERYB, this Sunday (15th) at Clowes Methodist Church, Greenwood Avenue, Hull at 7.45 pm, there will be an open rehearsal prior to the National Championships the following Sunday.

The format of the evening will be:  A 30 minute rehearsal on the test piece “Penlee” by Simon Dobson, followed by a first public performance. Then a further hour of rehearsal to conclude with a second performance of “Penlee”. The audience will have the opportunity to stay for the full two hour rehearsal or alternatively leave after the 1st performance. The evening will give a wonderful insight into the preparations required for a competition such as this which have been going on throughout the summer. There is no charge for this evening.

We trust that many will be able to join us as we start the last week of preparation.
